Key West Light

In 1848, the present Key West lighthouse was built in 48 days at a cost of $7,247. It stands 86 feet tall, and was the only southern light to stay lit during the Civil War. Located at the intersection of Truman Ave. and Whitehead St., this lighthouse is a tourist favorite with an excellent museum and tours. Key West is a city with an incredible history of storms, sunken treasure, pirates, slave trading ships, war, and it’s notorious salvage business.

In this painting is a 2-man Japanese submarine that was captured at Pearl Harbor and a Spanish galleon anchor. Both relics are now seen at the Navy Maritime Museum. From the catwalk wrapped around the third-order Fresnel lens, the view is overwhelming. Look east to the Atlantic and south to Cuba, west to the Gulf of Mexico, across the street to Ernest Hemingway’s home, Duval Street, and the entire classic town of Key West.
